WHO - This course if for anyone who loves to sing! We will be exploring Georgian and Corsican polyphony and learning by ear and some written music. This course will foster a supportive environment where we will work on the intricate ensemble singing of these two incredible traditions and we will encourage people to try singing in smaller groups if and when they feel ready.
Join us for a journey into the beautiful worlds of Georgian and Corsican Polyphony. Though these two countries are geographically far apart, their music has some interesting similarities and people who love one tend of love the other. We will gather for 6 evenings in the fall to work on this beautiful and deep music. In this course, we will learn the music all together in a large group and there will be plenty of opportunities for people to try the music in smaller ensembles if they are interested (this will all be voluntary!) Participants will also receive lots of source and example recordings from Corsican and Georgian ensembles that we can collectively study and learn from. Where possible Karla will provide part recordings
as well.
Since 2018, Karla has traveled to Georgia once and Corsica twice to study and has sought out many opportunities to study these two musical genres over the year. Karla will be working closely with some of her teachers in these styles to help prepare for this course. We will spend this dedicated time together to work on the songs, tone, ornamentation and ensemble singing. There is the possibility of a small performance at the end of this course.
INSTRUCTOR
KARLA MUNDY
Karla Mundy is a vibrant, soulful and diverse vocalist, pianist, arranger and choir leader. Karla directs two community choirs in Vancouver Rhythm 'n' Roots, and City Soul Choir. She leads harmony singing workshops throughout BC and organizes many singing camps, workshops and singing study trips abroad. Karla is a founding member of the No Sh!t Shirleys, TriVo, Cleia, Plough, Tanglewood Trio and Big Whoop! Karla is passionate about teaching harmony singing, getting the music off the page and digging deep into new musical territory.
In 2014, Karla realized her dream of creating an intensive singer's camp on the West Coast. After years of attending music camps with strong instrumental programs, she was convinced that there was a need and a desire for a retreat focused on singing where students could explore their voices and different styles with a faculty of amazing vocalists. SongRoots Summer Camp was born that summer and 2026 marks the 13th time singers have gathered on Gambier Island for a glorious week of singing exploration, artistic renewal and community celebration.
Karla has lead Singing Study trips with SongRoots to Cuba, Mexico, New Orleans, Ireland, Asheville, France, Italy and has co-lead trips to Corsica, Georgia and South Africa with Village Harmony. More recently, Karla has been co-leading trips to South Africa with Bongani Music Creations and Bongani and Karla have their eyes set on going back in March 2028! Karla is working with members of Culomba to try to put together trips to Corsica and Georgia in the coming year or so.
